Why So Many Women Wear Wigs

Every year, a vast majority of African women in the UK make the decision to wear wigs. Read this post to find out why, and why you too should join them.

1. Wearing wigs saves time

Wigs are gold to working women.

The thing about keeping weaves or some other types of hair extensions is that they require a long visit to a salon.

Even if you’re able to weave them on yourself at home, they still require you to invest significant time in them. But our lives are busier than ever and we really cannot afford those extra hours spent doing something other than work, rest or spending quality time with our family and loved ones. Wearing a wig saves women some time and energy to do these other things and throw in a favourite pastime or two.

You get salon-quality styles in a fraction of the time it takes to get weaves, attachments or style natural hair. All you need to do is comb your wig, shake it out, put it on your head, and walk out the door.

2. Wearing wigs is cheaper

Wigs can be expensive, no doubt.

A natural style is less expensive but that’s only when you look at the upfront cost of wearing a wig. Over time, wearing wigs costs significantly less.

And you want to know what’s even more expensive? Salon visits.

Shorter styles need to be recut or trimmed every 4 – 8 weeks, medium or longer styles every 8 – 12 weeks. Add that on top of what it costs to have your hair smoothed, curled, colour treated, or blown out and maintaining a natural hairstyle can cost a lot in a year.

Plus, you’ll need to buy shampoo, conditioner, and styling products so that you can style your hair at home on days you don’t go to the salon.

Wigs, in contrast, only need to be replaced every six to twelve months (depending on the quality of the wig and how well you take care of it). Since most wigs come pre-styled, all you’ll need to hold the style is some wig shampoo and conditioner, and a wig stand.

If you would like to get human hair wigs, make sure you check for quality to avoid getting swindled.

3. Wigs disguise thinning hair

Hair loss among women is a lot more common than most people think. It’s not just older women who are affected by hair loss, either. Younger women experience hair loss as well due to weight gain or loss, stress, illness, or postpartum side effects.

There are lots of serums, treatments, and therapies for treating hair loss. But a good number of these take time, and some are ineffective, pricey, or just a pretty tough ask. For instance, the onion treatment.

Most times we just prefer to disguise the thinning hair with wigs. They have the added benefit of giving us a new look to make us feel flirty and vivacious, or mysterious and confident even when we’re losing some of our hair.

4. Wigs let you change your style whenever you want

They give you that freedom to switch things up.

There are lots and lots of different length wigs. And many women find it lovely to switch up their style regularly.

If you would like to change things up regularly enough as well, then wigs are the way to go. They let you try out as many new styles as you want, whenever you want.

On the other hand, if you try to get your natural hair styled as regularly, you’ll accumulate a lot of damage. Relaxing and curling treatments, dye jobs, blowouts – all of these cause damage to your hair.

5. Wigs protect your natural hair

Curling irons damage hair. Straighteners damage hair. Blow dryers damage hair.

Hairspray, mousse, root lifters, and heat protectors – they all damage hair.

Most of the tools we use to style our hair have negative effects in some way or the other. And if your hair is thinning or damaged, then damaging it even more is the last thing you want to do.

Wearing a wig not only protects the natural hair underneath your wig but also encourages regrowth. Wigs literally give your hair a break, allowing it to grow back stronger and longer than ever before.

Just make sure you’re wearing the right type of wig if you’re trying to regrow your hair. Choose a wig that’s made with a breathable cap that gives your skin room to breathe underneath your wig. If your wig fully covers your skin, natural oils will build up and stunt your hair’s regrowth.

Moreover, wigs can protect your hair from bad weather too. In very cold periods, our hair can become brittle and dry, but wigs protect them from the elements.

6. Wigs are the only way to guarantee a great hair day

Our hair greatly affects how we feel about our looks.

We can wear the same makeup with the same outfit on two different days and feel totally different about ourselves based on how our hair looked those days.

When your hair looks good, you feel good – plain and simple. And the only way to guarantee that you will have a great hair day is to wear a wig.

Why? Because most wigs come pre-styled and ready to wear. It’s already in the perfect shape for you. All you’ve got to do is put it on and head out.

What about you? Do you love wearing wigs, and why?
