Human hair extensions have become a household name in the beauty and hair industry. Hardly do we find ladies or women who do not use hair extensions. Hair extensions have the power to alter or define a woman’s looks. They add volume to hair and hence can elevate or change your looks. Looking closely at most female and male celebrities, you’ll realize that many rely on human hair extensions’ power to define their looks.

Just as you care for your natural hair, hair extensions require the same care. Human hair extensions are similar to natural hair. The only difference is hair extensions are not nourished via the root of the hair, so they can thin out, become brittle, or get split ends. Therefore, the kind of care you give to your extensions determines their beauty and longevity. How do you care for your extensions and maintain its beauty? Read on to find out.

1. Washing

Washing your extensions is the best way to keep them fresh, clean, and healthy. Before washing your extensions, ensure that you detangle them by gently brushing them. Brushing removes any tangles or knots that may cause further damage if not handled early. Once the previous step is completed, wet your extensions with lukewarm water systematically (from top to bottom). Please don’t use hot water to avoid damaging your extensions or scalding.

Apply a mixture of sulfate-free shampoo and water to your scalp. Gently massage using your fingertips from the roots of your hair to the shaft of your extensions. As you do this, remember to detangle any knots present and rinse off with lukewarm water.

Apply a mixture of water and conditioner to dilute it. You should apply the conditioner from the mid-length to the tips of the extensions. Avoid the root of your hair or the extensions to prevent a build-up. Leave it for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Please don’t use hot water!!

Gently remove excess water from your hair using a microfiber towel. Apply leave-in conditioner to your extensions. You can oil your scalp to prevent dryness.

2. Styling

Styling human hair extensions requires caution to avoid damage. Always apply a heat protectant spray if you use heat-styling tools such as blow or hooded dryers, curling irons, or straighteners. Use a minimum heat level to prevent damage to your extensions.

While we recommend the use of styling tools, it is advised that it shouldn’t be a constant routine. Limit the use of heat styling tools to prevent dryness and split ends. Opt for heatless styling methods like rollers to create waves and curls without damaging the hair.

3. Brushing

Use the recommended brush designed for extensions to avoid snagging and pulling. Brush gently, starting from the tips while working your way up to the roots. Brush regularly to prevent tangling and matting.

4. Sleeping

Proper nighttime care is essential to prevent tangling and damage. Protect your extensions by sleeping with a silk or satin bonnet and a silk or satin pillowcase. Satin and silk materials are smooth and gentle, reducing friction and preventing frizz as you sleep.

5. Storage

Proper storage of your extensions can help prolong their lifespan when not in use. Ensure your extensions are clean and completely dry before storage to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Also, detangle the extensions by brushing thoroughly before storage to prevent matting or tangling.

Storage is an essential factor to consider to prolong the longevity of your human hair extensions. Ensure it’s in a breathable container, such as a fabric storage bag or a box designed for hair extensions. Avoid plastic bags, as they can trap moisture. Always lay the extensions flat or hang them to prevent tangling.
