Double cleansing is no news to skincare experts or aestheticians, but it’s a new term to others. Aestheticians believe it’s the key to maintaining clean, radiant, and fresh skin, while others believe it’s another unnecessary step in an already complex regimen.
So, what’s the story? Is it worth the hype? Or will it be like past trends, such as turmeric or lemon scrubs, which we don’t advise using on your skin? In this blog post, we will discuss the pros and cons of double cleansing.
What is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing means washing your face twice: first with an oil-based cleanser (cleansing water and micellar water) and then with an aqueous cleanser (foam cleanser or gel).
Here’s how it works:
The oil-based cleanser dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. The water-based cleanser clears sweat, dirt, and any residue left. When you have a greasy plate after eating, would you rinse it with water and be done with it? No. You would apply soap to emulsify the oil first. It’s the same mechanism with your skin.
The Pros of Double Cleansing
Prevents breakouts & clogged pores
Ever have the feeling that your cleanser just isn’t working as it should? It’s because water-based cleansers can’t successfully eliminate oil-based impurities. Oil, sweat, dead skin cells, and water are the best beds for clogged pores. Double cleansing eliminates everything; your usual cleanser can’t penetrate even the gunk. So your skin gets a clean slate every time.
2. Gets rid of makeup and sunscreen properly
If you’re wearing makeup or sunscreen (which, by the way, you should be), one cleanse may not be sufficient to get it all off. Sunscreens are usually water-resistant, and some long-lasting foundations are essentially glue to the facs. A regular cleanser on its own won’t do the job, and it will leave residues that will eventually clog your pores. An oil cleanser melts away makeup and sunscreen like magic. At the same time, the water-based cleanser removes residual dirt. Say goodbye to breakouts from product buildup.
3. Makes your skin brighter
Double cleansing can be your bestie if you have been battling dull skin. Some cleansers contain vitamin E, which is known for giving your skin a healthy glow. We recommend double cleansing to remove dead skin cells and moisturize your skin.
4. Makes skincare products work better
Think of trying to apply your pricey serums and moisturizers over residual grime and oil. Not ideal, right? If your skin is cleansed well, your skincare products absorb better, so you’re reaping the benefits of them that you’re paying for.
Cons of Double Cleansing
Risk of over-exfoliation
Most Cleansers contain seeds, Enzymes, and other active ingredients. Excessive use can lead to breakouts, peeling, and other skin reactions due to a compromised skin barrier.
The increased cost of product
Cleansers are expensive, so purchasing two may not be affordable for everyone. Get a cleanser that can effectively do both.
Disturbance of skin barrier
This is true for individuals with dry or sensitive skin. Excessive double cleansing strips the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity.
Time-consuming
Some people’s skincare routines consist of five to seven steps, excluding cleansing. When we include double cleansing, we are looking at seven to nine steps. This might not be feasible for everyone, particularly those with hectic schedules who like simple skincare routines.
Not suitable for all skin types
Double cleansing is beneficial to those with oily or acne skin. Using this technique, individuals with dry and sensitive skin may experience facial irritation, breakouts, peeling, and moisture loss.

Double cleansing is beneficial for some but not for others. It can cause more harm than good in dry and sensitive skin types. The most important step before considering the double cleansing path is determining your skin type and needs. That said, only double cleanse when wearing makeup, sunscreen or feeling oily.
